TECHNOTES #1 Favicons Break Out!

Ever since internet browsers appeared the term bookmark has taken on another definition and several sub-definitions associated with it’s use.  Anyway, today bookmarking usually refers to actually saving one of more of your favorite sites in a folder named bookmarks or favorites that’s stored under your browser’s menu and in an html backup file.

First, there’s basic bookmarking that we’ve all come to know as the ‘bookmark’ or ‘favorites’ button on our browser menu bar, or CTRL D
on the keyboard, or the right-click drop down menu selection ‘bookmark this page‘.

Secondly, as a subset of basic bookmarking there’s also the common practice known as social bookmarking where we share our favorite websites or  bookmarks with the world at large through social bookmarking sites like Delicious, Digg, or Stumbleupon, and through social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, and Linkedin. This particular article is not about social bookmarking.  That’s a large enough topic for another series of articles.  This is about basic bookmarking for personal and business purposes.

Sharing, promoting, and saving both link based bookmarks or shortcut links and text based bookmarks has become something that I do routinely, and so much so that my browser’s bookmark menu has become ‘too big to manage’.  Has your bookmark menu outgrown it’s habitat to?

I wondered if there was something that would make bookmarking easier.  Can’t I do a simple one click, drag ‘n drop style bookmark.

I proceeded to make the browser window smaller so that I could see my desktop at the same time and then the trick came to me by staring a little longer than usual at my browser’s address window and that little square on the left of the address window that seemed to change all the time.  That little square is called a favicon.   I grabbed hold of  it with a left click and dragged the site link right onto my desktop.  Voila, a simple one click drag n’ drop bookmark!  This also works by dragging the favicon right down on to your task bar and as you hover over the task bar the browser will automatically minimize and the desktop will appear and then you can release the shortcut on to your desktop.

That’s also what I call, in effect, “off browser” bookmarking and the same technique works for “on browser” bookmarking to.  Simply left-click and drag the favicon over your browser’s bookmark or favorites menu button and when the menu automatically opens, continue to hold the link until the folder you’d like to save to is lit up and release the mouse.

I then made a LINKS folder on my desktop as a main storage folder and started to drag n’ drop links directly into it.  Soon I could see the dominant or distinct categories and groupings of links and then made a seperate folder for each within the LINKS folder.

Off browser, favicon style bookmarking gives me a granular sense of the sites that I like or that I like enough to share with others – and all without having to clog up my browser’s bookmark menu.

The technique saves me loads of time because I can manage, organize, and access all my bookmarks without going online and naturally, of course, I must actually be online to access the sites that the bookmarks link to.  When I am online here again it saves time because I don’t have to wait for or wade through my browser’s long bookmark menu every time I want to bookmark a specific type of website.  I can simply use the one click trick and get right back to business.

I still use my browser’s bookmark menu feature to access the sites I visit on a regular basis but not for all the other types of sites that I want to save or share.

Finally, you may need the text url in order to share it in emails or paste into your url shortening service.   Simply right-click on the shortcut link itself and select properties and within the properties window is the text url.   Right-click, copy and paste into any document you wish.

Enjoy all the time and many websites you’ll save and share as a favicon bookie.  :-)

That’s the story of the favicon’s escape, surrender to capture, and confession to distributing raw & uncut hypertext across the borderline.  All are now living with relatives under house address.  ;-)   ;-)

  1. I’m a big fan of drag and drop, so I tried your favicon trick Steve – and it works, no problem. 8)

My bookmarks are called “favourites” on Internet Explorer, and luckily I haven’t let them get out of control. I have one sub-folder for ‘Blogs’ and the rest of my bookmarks I can see on one page. ;-)

Keep these tips coming though Steve, it’s useful to know. 8)

Hi John, Thanks for checking it out. I’m amazed that you’ve kept your browser’s favourites folder so in order. I’m a bit link hungry and click happy when I’m online which leads to a bloated browser.
    Be well, Steve D.

  5. Hi Steve, you’ve just solved a problem for me in this post. I’ve been putting a little package together and wanted to include pages to my websites.

Thinking i was clever i went my webmail account and sent an email to my outlook ex account containg the urls, i then right clicked and saved the pages to the relevent folders. Problem solved i thought…..wrong! When i checked them the images were missing so i’ve been scratching my head about it.

You’ve just solved the problem for me Steve, thanks mate.

Have you heard about the 100 blog comment challenge?

A few of us bloggers have got together for it. The aim is to write a blog post and then try and reach 100 comments for it, which in turn builds backlinks and helps improve our google ranking, as well as letting us get to know eachother a bit better.

I have created a page on my blog dedicated to the contributors Steve:

If you would like to climb aboard let me know and i’ll add your details to the page.

  7. Hi Steve

I enjoyed reading your blog particularly your thought provoking post about autoresponders.

Whilst I agree that it is important to control your costs very carefully particularly when setting up your business I do feel that the long term benefits of building your list from day one will outweigh the costs of running your autoresponder.

The danger of waiting until you have enough knowledge to set everything up perfectly before you invest is that you spend too long setting up and get sidetracked or lose interest and quit before you’ve really begun.

Hi Stuart, A hearty welcome to you! Thanks for stopping by. Your point on auto-responders is well taken. I did set up an opt-in form and signed up with Aweber long before I had any offers or promotions in the shoot as you may have gathered from my post. The thrust of my caveat is based partly on the idea that many folks are only going to pass your way on the first encounter and that they may never return for one reason or another. Consequently, placing your product or service offer early on in the process maybe the only opportunity to convert a subscriber into a customer. A simple Clickbank link to a product that enhances your opt-in gift is a relatively easy solution to implement within your auto-responder series. I neglected to offer any real solutions in the post and that’s something that I’ll do henceforth. Steve D.

Nice Little Time Saving Tip you wrote here. And is practical here. Our disk drive capacity is way powerful than before, but our attention is getting sacred as multi-tasking is no longer viable to describe the way we work, we all now need to learn hyper-tasking. Anything that can save our attention and focus energy is well worth a try. Your tip here does that.

Thanks for sharing this excellent idea! Although I have thousands of bookmarks on my browser and organized in subfolders I sometimes get lost in there. :-) Well I guess I have to try your tip.

    Take care,
    Andreas

PS. I have the same problem with Craig. The ComLuv plugin shows a message “No last blog posts to return”. Mine blog feed load correctly. If you click the gray arrow next to the message it mentions something with banning. Perhaps we had a ban instead of love from ComLuv plugin? :(

  73. Hi again Steve,

I found the solution to mine and Craigs problem.

It seems that my URL was added to the errors table of ComLuv database.

To remove it you just go to: http://comluv.com/member/
and create a new account. Then you have to verify your email address.
    Then you go to http://comluv.com/member/unban-url/
and enter the URL of the blog and click the button.

    Problem solved! :)

I hope this will also help Craig.

    Take care,
    Andreas

Hi Andreas, thanks for doing the research on the CommentLuv problems. I followed your advice and became a registered member with CommentLuv. After confirming my membership email address I continued to the members unban-url page and entered in yours’ and Craig’s urls and it then indicated that those urls are not in my banned url table. So, I’ll do a regular check up over the week and try to learn a bit more. Take care, Steve D.

  77. Hi Steve

Had read about Favicons on Jose Perez’s blog. However never knew that it could be dragged anywhere wanted. Guess I did not understand it yet!

When you store each of these social bookmarks favicons, how do you use it .. I mean you would only be able to use it when you are connected to the internet right ?

Oh I think it gives you the shortcut to directly get onto the bookmark website – its like having your favourites on your desktop – right ?

    Nice to meet you …

    Cheers!
    Abizer

    SteveNo Gravatar Reply:

Hello Abizar, it’s nice to meet you to! Yes, favicon bookmarking is exactly like having your favorites on your desktop but naturally the links are usually dragged into a unique LINKS folder on to your desktop or into any other folder you choose.

And yes again on your first question. Since the links we’re talking about are shortcuts to an internet address then yes, your computer would have to be online to get to the sites that are stored as shortcut links in the favicon bookmarking folder.
There’s more to come Abizar, and thanks for the excellent questions. Be well, Steve D.

What a delightful post. I have to admit, when I first started reading your post I thought, “I’m in way over my head.” But when I saw “URL Bookmarking,” I knew I was going to be o.k.

I, too, have done some social bookmarking…not as much as I need to. I also suffered from an oversized browser bookmarker on my previous laptop but couldn’t figure out how to transfer them over.

Loved the idea of favicon bookmarking. I will give it a try.

  107. Hi Steve,

I have to admit that a lot of your post and the comments have gone over my head. I am new to computers and the technology involved and rely on my techie for advice and problem solving.

I am on Internet Explorer and my problem is remembering where the url’s are listed in my ‘favourites’. I have that many I will have to ask him how to organise them better.

I am learning slowly but surely.

    Regards,

    Bill

Greetings Bill and welcome, I find it’s easier to convey technical stuff in screen capture video. Text based demos can be misunderstood without the right visuals to enhance the writing. Anyway, I’m working on a short video to demonstrate favicon bookmarking. I hope to clarify anything I muddled in the article. Slow but sure is still one of my golden rules to. Best of luck ahead, Steve D.

  111. Hi Steve, This is a good useful post to refer to again. I have about 15 categories in my bookmarks and several sub categories, although everything is (almost) in order I tend to forget where I put them. One trick I have now is because I use Firefox (this may work in other browsers) and I save several favourite tabs at once as a bookmark tab (normally monthly) and give each one a heading. This way I know they are important enough to go back to on a regular basis. It works for me so others may wish to try. Enjoy the challenge mate.
